Cytoplasm
The cytoplasm fills the entire space between the plasma membrane and the nucleus, serving as the cell's internal environment. It's not just empty space - it's where most cellular activities happen!
This gel-like substance is composed of about 70-80% water but maintains a semi-solid consistency. The cytoplasm contains various organelles suspended in cytosol (the fluid portion), along with the cytoskeleton that provides structure and facilitates movement within the cell.
Other important components include proteins, sugars, amino acids, nucleic acids, and various ions like sodium, potassium, and calcium. These components work together to support the cell's metabolic activities, including energy production, protein synthesis, and waste management.
Think of it this way: Cytoplasm is like the interior of a busy factory where all the machinery (organelles) is suspended and connected!
