Critical Approaches to Writing Critiques
When writing critiques, you can apply different analytical approaches depending on what aspects of the work you want to examine. Each approach offers a unique lens for analysis.
Formalism examines a text through its structural elements without considering external factors like history or author. Look at techniques, central passages, rhyme, rhythm, and the unity of the work. This approach focuses purely on what's within the text itself.
Feminist criticism examines how gender and women are represented, revealing patriarchal culture and various forms of oppression economic, socio−political, psychological. This approach highlights gender equality issues and power imbalances between genders.
Reader-response criticism centers on your reaction as a reader. It argues that a text only gains meaning through reader interaction - the text and reader are inseparable, with the reader creating the meaning.
Marxist criticism investigates economic classes and social conflicts, particularly between working and elite classes. This approach reveals how socio-economic systems influence people's experiences, examining social class of authors, characters, and their interactions.
Challenge yourself: Try analyzing the same work using two different critical approaches and notice how your focus and conclusions change based on the approach you choose.
